Heat-Transfer Vinyl Wrinkles or Bubbles: Diagnosis and Solutions

Wrinkles, ripples or bubbles after pressing HTV? Find likely causes and check the exact vinyl and fabric settings before trying again.

Heat-transfer vinyl (HTV) that wrinkles, ripples or bubbles after pressing does not always need “more heat.” First work out whether the issue may come from the fabric, pressure or transfer: adding heat can make the result worse.

1. Look at where the wrinkle appears

  • The fabric is creased under the design: a seam, hem or elastic area may keep the fabric from lying flat or make pressure uneven.
  • The HTV ripples or looks shrunken: check whether pressing time was repeated or extended. Too much heat exposure can shrink the transfer or fabric.
  • An edge lifts or a small bubble appears: do not pull on the design. First check fabric compatibility, pressure and the peel method specified for that HTV.

Near a seam or raised area, look for a flat pressing surface. Manufacturers recommend compensating for uneven surfaces so the design receives even pressure. See, for example, Siser’s HTV troubleshooting guide.

2. Prepare the fabric before pressing again

Place the garment on a suitable surface and smooth the area without stretching the fabric. If your transfer instructions call for a pre-press, follow them to remove wrinkles and moisture before positioning the design. Stahls recommends this preparation in its application guide.

Check the garment label and the HTV’s stated compatibility. For coated, technical, very stretchy or heat-sensitive fabric, test on a scrap or discreet area first when the product instructions allow it.

3. Use the settings for the exact HTV

There is no universal setting for every HTV. Temperature, time, pressure and peel method vary by material. Follow the instructions for the exact product and do not copy settings from another film. Siser’s troubleshooting advice also recommends checking the material, application instructions, pressure and peel.

For Maison du Flex Premium PU HTV, the product page lists 150–160°C, 10–15 seconds and a hot peel. These settings apply to that specific product; use the product page for any other finish.

4. Avoid a correction that makes the problem worse

Do not automatically extend the press time or press several more times without checking the instructions: excessive heat can shrink the film or fabric. Siser also explains that repeated presses add heat to the lower layers of a multicolour design. If the fabric or HTV has already rippled, stop and let it cool before deciding what to do next.

If the problem is near a seam or raised feature, read our guide to keeping pressure even near seams and zippers. If a transfer is misplaced or damaged, consult our careful removal guide.

Next time, record the settings

To narrow down the cause, note the fabric, HTV product, temperature, time, press type and peel method. Change one setting at a time and test on a scrap before decorating the finished garment. This helps distinguish a preparation issue from a compatibility or setting issue.

For a useful diagnosis, the key details are fabric + exact HTV + settings used. You can also check the Premium PU HTV specifications before your next test.

Manufacturer instructions for the HTV, fabric and heat press always take priority. If you are unsure, test on a suitable scrap first.
